Interview with Lightfoot Construction Owner, Warren Lightfoot

MD: Thanks for chatting with me today. Why don’t you start by introducing yourself and what you do?

WL: My name is Warren Lightfoot, and I am the owner of Lightfoot Construction, a mid-sized building firm in the Pacific Northwest that focuses on luxury custom commercial and residential projects for clients.

MD: How long have you been working with homeowners in the Vancouver area?

WL: I was fortunate to have stumbled upon my ideal career while studying Biology at University in the mid-1990s. During the summers, I worked for my cousin, who ran his own Contracting firm, and by 1999, I knew that bringing buildings to life was what I was meant to do.

Since then, it has been a steady journey to where we are today: building beautiful custom homes and businesses for clients worldwide.

MD: What do you find surprises homeowners most about designing and building a home?

WL: I’ve found that homeowners are usually most surprised by the amount of time that high-end and detailed work takes. Designing and building a custom home is not a process that should be rushed, and it’s wise to expect care and time to be invested into each step of the process.

MD: What would you say is an approximate range for the overall investment in a custom home?

WL: Each project is unique in its details and requirements, and we’ve seen a wide range in the overall investment of custom homes. However, based on our experience, a fully customized project would start at around $600/sq ft, depending on the client’s investment goals and overall programming needs.

MD: Who are the key members needed to design and construct a custom home?

WL: The essential team members for a custom project are an Architect, Interior Designer, and Contractor. These key members collaborate with the client to ensure that each goal is met in the best way possible. In addition to this core team, several other consultants are required to coordinate and complete a fully customized home.

MD: What do you suggest homeowners look for in those team members?

WL: If you are building a custom home, the skill of the team members you hire will, of course, be of utmost importance. A professional’s talent combined with experience will give them the ability to execute your unique needs and desires for your home.

Additionally, in our experience, collaboration is a crucial component. Team members who can communicate and coordinate efficiently (with each other and the client) are priceless.

MD: Is there any other advice you would give someone who is considering this process for the first time?

WL: If you are considering a custom home, you already understand the magnitude of your investment. You want to ensure that the results will be worthy of your time and funds. It is always wise to take time and care with each and every critical decision.

MD: Thanks for sharing insight into building a custom home, Warren!
