A custom kitchen that feels fresh and bright yet filled with timeless character? That’s a kitchen that is always in style. Now, add loads of storage, two sinks, and comfortable island seating, and you have a kitchen that works hard for you every day of the week!
The couple behind the dreamy kitchen transformation I’m sharing with you today are semi-retired and had searched for seven years to find a home in their ideal neighbourhood in West Vancouver. Once they found it, they knew it would need some updates to match the style and function they wanted for their forever home.
They started with the kitchen, but they quickly felt overwhelmed by the many choices and decisions that come with renovations. That’s when they called us.
Before: Dark and Dated Kitchen in West Vancouver
Our clients admitted that they only had a vague idea about their desired aesthetic, but there were a few requests they were confident about, so we started there. They wanted…
- A bright open kitchen that doesn’t feel cold (no all-white kitchen)
- A large island with seating for 3-4
- Space and features for entertaining
- Plenty of storage space
- A small workspace within the kitchen
- Small appliances and a hidden microwave
- Flow with the rest of the home
- A home that reflects their love of the outdoors
All great goals, and we quickly realized that our biggest challenge would be fulfilling our clients’ wishlist within the kitchen’s footprint and within their budget.
Creative Solutions for a Custom Kitchen
Whenever our options are limited, this means thinking out-of-the-box and finding creative solutions. To help develop a design concept that balances everything our clients want and need, we usually create a 3D rendering of what the completed space will look like. Here’s what we prepared for this West Vancouver kitchen:
Huge difference from before, right? Imagine that we handed our clients the 2D sketched footprint of this space. They would never have been able to see it with this level of detail! Once they laid eyes on it, they loved it. They said they were instantly relieved that they no longer had to make all the decisions on their own and could finally envision the final result.
Once our clients approved the design plans and our materials selections, we began the construction, installation, and final styling. Yes, even a kitchen needs styling! Now, come step into the final space…
After: An Elevated and Timeless Custom Kitchen
Ahhh… fresh, elevated, and timeless. The first feature to attract your attention are these beautiful, nature-inspired grey-blue cabinets that wrap around the entire space. The colour adds a sense of calm to the space while still allowing the area to feel bright — without using all white.
Reflecting their love for the outdoors are other natural materials, like the stunning quartzite counters in a leathered finish and the white oak accents. We added barstools and pendants in eggshell white to further brighten the space, add comfort, and make it a space that supports entertaining. Meanwhile, the glazed tile backsplash adds a touch of timeless modernity that is also perfect for low-maintenance cleaning behind the stove.
This kitchen has so many other great features built right into the space. See how the upper cabinets extend down to the countertop on the right? This cabinet door lift system reveals the microwave and small appliances hidden behind the vertical door. We chose Shaker-style cabinets to coordinate with the other millwork in the home, and we paneled the refrigerator and freezer for a cohesive and custom look.
This project was all about giving every inch of the space purpose. For example, we added plenty of inserts like a recycling centre, spice rack, pull-out utensil drawer, magic corner, and cookie sheet dividers. We also created an area for our clients to display art above their stacked ovens. The art alcove is a great place to add personal, meaningful elements that reflect their love of the outdoors or bring back memories from their travels.
Other thoughtful details continue to take this kitchen to the next level. We installed two sinks, each with a polished nickel touchless faucet for convenience. We also added an island footrest to make sitting on those gorgeous white stools even more comfortable.
Last but not least, our clients wanted to have a small desk space in their kitchen area. With careful planning, we nestled this work zone at the edge of the kitchen, where it won’t take up important space or get in the way of the cook or guests. We paired the workspace with this beautiful cowhide stool in an earthy brown to help accentuate the warm tones of white oak elements. The balance of warm and cool make this kitchen the perfect blend of luxurious and inviting.
Our Clients’ Thoughts
What did our clients say about the process? And their new custom kitchen?
“Maria’s professionalism is her strength. She has a good process – with as little pain as possible, she nudged us forward to think about preferences and choices that would be consistent with our lifestyle. The end result supports our lifestyle and certainly meets, often exceeds, our needs. Maria’s interior design turned our new house into our home.”
We couldn’t be happier with how this custom kitchen turned out. We know it will support and delight our clients many years into the future, and that makes the whole process worth it.
